The Public Life of Little Pets

Borsó gave birth to nine puppies on the night of January 21st. There are yellow and black girls and boys among them. All are beautiful, viable puppies. Our dam’s owner, Melinda Leidgeb, reported on how their first two days went.

It is a great excitement for Melinda to help Borsó with the care of the puppies again, and she can approach the next two months a bit more calmly, as our dam has become more experienced and nicely feeds and cleans her puppies.

“I feel that the biggest challenge for me will be the number, since Borsó has doubled last year’s litter and added one more. The nine puppies don’t require much work yet compared to what’s coming when I’ll need to clean up after them frequently, and I’ll have to pay attention to many other things.”

Melinda was busy weighing them when we spoke: “The hardest part right now is identifying which is which, so that I don’t weigh the same one twice while missing another.”

She finds all of them adorable, but she does have a favorite. It’s the black female, perhaps because she’s the only puppy of that color and sex in the litter. Melinda noticed a similarity with Borsó’s previous litter: “Again this year, a yellow, heavy-weight male was the firstborn, just like Indián last year. Borsó started the sequence this way once more.”

It’s interesting how quickly the puppies grow from one day to the next. The litter is nicely uniform, but there are differences; on average, they gain 30-40 grams, though some reach 50 grams.
