This is how a pretty girl and a kind boy fell in love with each other. Only one minor detail could have prevented them from doing so: one of them cannot see. Our Valentine’s Day conversation with Réka and Krisztián.
How did you meet?
The young couple started chatting with each other on Facebook five years ago. Réka Kindl recalls this way: ‘While browsing my Facebook page, I noticed right away that I didn’t know this boy, so I messaged him, and it turned out that he accidentally ended up among my friends. We started talking and noticed that we had been chatting for days.
Réka seemed very lovely based on the photos. From the pictures on her profile, it was clear to me that she cannot see, and that did not change my desire to get to know her,” said Krisztián Kindl.
In fact, it was so much the case that he was the one who initiated the meeting.
I was quite distrustful and didn’t want to talk to him in person, but then I gathered the courage to meet him. We were both nervous,” -recalls Réka.
Krisztián continues with a smile: “She came down to the front of the house, came towards me, hugged me, and I gave her a kiss.”
After the meeting, a deeper acquaintance began, and a closer bond started to form. At first, Réka wasn’t so confident in it because I had been disappointed many times before.
I wouldn’t have thought that a boy who I feel so emotionally close to, and who is so handsome, would want to talk to me
– she said.
I liked this girl so much that it didn’t matter to me that she is visually impaired. I usually look at the inner qualities, not the physical appearance
responded Krisztián.
It’s completely natural that the visual impairment brought up many questions and some uncertainty as well. “Krisztián was very worried in the beginning about how to treat me in a special way, but we agreed that we would be equals in this relationship,” Réka mentioned. Then, she remembered an important conversation between them: “Now I’d like to quote Krisztián. I asked him, ‘Are you sure you want a blind girlfriend? Because you can sit anywhere and meet anyone.’”
To this, Krisztián smiled and said, “That’s a minor detail.
Then he added, “It has remained this way ever since.
What has changed in you?
Réka concisely phrased it this way:
Krisztián has played a very important role in my acceptance, and after that, it became easier to accept myself.
Then she elaborated: “With him, my life has completely changed because he has never made me feel, nor treated me even slightly different from how he would treat a sighted person. And what I really needed was not to be held back, not even pitied a tiny bit, but to push forward for our common goals and achieve them at any cost. I have him to thank for the drastic change within me.”
The young girl has also brought a huge change into Krisztián’s life:
Since I got to know Réka, I am more open and determined; I owe it to her that I have become more agile. Since she came into my life, I stress less, and now I manage better with people in my work.
Is it true that many visually impaired girls and boys would like to have a sighted partner
Réka responded: “This isn’t necessarily true; I think it depends on the person. The person themselves is what matters, not whether they can see or not. For me, Krisztián is my partner in crime, my lover, my husband, my friend, my companion, not a tool. It’s not my eyes, my white cane, my guide dog, or my assistant; he is a feeling person, and I place his lunch in front of him just like anyone else or wash his dirty work pants. He’s not there to help me 24/7, he’s a person I love and who loves me back. I believe this is how it should be, and this is normal. Of course, he shows me what interests me in a store, and then I link arms with him and we glide together.”
What are the common goals?
Réka and Krisztián live in a lovely little apartment in the seventh district, close to City Park. They would like a larger apartment to have more space. A few months ago, they moved in with Babér, Réka’s guide dog, and they’ve even talked about starting a family.
“I believe that with Krisztián and Babér by my side, all of my dreams and wishes have finally come true, and together, we can move forward on life’s cobbled streets. I hope we’ll be enriched with many positive experiences and that many happy moments still await us together,” said Réka, expressing their shared hopes.
