The Nine Adventurers

The future guide dogs are having a perfect puppyhood! Topáz’s puppies turned five weeks old this week, and not only have they quickly conquered the autumn garden, but they are already sleeping outside at night. When we visited them, they were tumbling around among the dewy leaves and occasionally disappearing into a huge tunnel.

The five-week-old puppies have moved into their protected garden run and inhabited the doghouse, where they can snuggle up and keep each other warm at night. In the mornings, they rush out to explore new surfaces, noises, and smells, and of course to romp around in the fresh air. In the meantime, minor, clumsy fights break out:

They are prepared for such a big leap, as they have been getting to know the outside world since they were three and a half weeks old. They had beautiful autumn weather, spending a few hours each day in the protected garden area reserved for them, and then spending the night indoors. During their first garden experience, they were not startled by the wind, the new surfaces, or the sound of autumn garden equipment. We, on the other hand, were amazed by this. Gizella Ménesi said that the first time, she took the puppies out one by one, holding them in her arms, because in her experience, they tend to be frightened by the unfamiliar world, but she did not sense any fear in Topáz’s puppies.

They see the light at the end of the tunnel

They are so brave and skilled that even crossing special surfaces, such as a tunnel, is no problem for them. Look what a capable, cheerful little team they make!

They are barely visible through the dense undergrowth, but they really enjoy hiding and are also getting better and better at wrestling with each other. Their raiser said:

Their movements are developing much faster than they would indoors. Everything counts, roaming around on different types of ground, in leaves, among branches, and under bushes. Sometimes, when they get going, it almost resembles proper running.

There’s gotta be a few bites left

The puppies in litter N are just as chubby and shapely as you would expect from healthy five-week-old puppies. They are no longer just drinking their mother’s milk: they also eagerly devour soaked puppy food, and they get plenty of exercise outdoors, so they are developing beautifully. They even have the opportunity for a second meal, but they must work for it!

The youngest is off on their own little adventure

The ninth puppy, and also the smallest, does not keep up with the bigger siblings because the difference in size and strength between them is so great that we do not expose her to such unequal conditions: her siblings, who are more than twice her size, often treat her like a squeaky toy, so she goes to the other part of the garden to get stronger and gain experience under special supervision. But she is not alone there either:

Although she cannot play with her 3.5 kg siblings with her 1.5 kg weight, her mother and other adult labs play gently with her

– said their caretaker.
