On June 30, Azúr gave birth to eight beautiful puppies: five males and three females. All three female puppies are yellow. Among the males, four are black and one is yellow. Azúr and all of the puppies are healthy.

“Azúr spent quite a while preparing, but once labor began, everything went quickly and smoothly. She is already an experienced mother, as this is her third litter, and she is caring for the puppies beautifully and confidently,” said Piroska Komondi, Head of Breeding and Animal Welfare at the Baráthegyi Guide Dog and Assistance Dog School Foundation.

The smallest puppy was born weighing 405 grams, while the largest weighed 465 grams. All of them are healthy, thriving little ones. Our professional team was present throughout the birth to ensure that everything went smoothly and safely.

Gain Practical Experience in a Friendly Community

While living with their puppy raiser families, the puppies both receive and give love. They also learn to adapt to everyday life, become familiar with the human-made environment, travel on different forms of public transport, and learn basic obedience. This essential early education provides the foundation for their future guide dog training, which is carried out by the Foundation’s professional trainers.

“Our Foundation prepares every volunteer puppy raiser for the role. We hold monthly puppy meetings, discuss any questions that arise, and help volunteers overcome any challenges they may encounter. Previous experience with dogs is not required to become a volunteer puppy raiser. What matters much more is being open to learning, as well as accepting the guidance and advice of our trainers. It is also important that the applicant has room in their life for a dog—taking the puppy to work or school whenever possible and spending plenty of time together during their free time. We are also delighted that our program is popular among retirees, who often have more time to devote to a puppy. We truly enjoy spending time with our ever-growing community of volunteer puppy raisers, and it is wonderful to see lasting friendships develop,” said Piroska Komondi.

The puppies remain connected with their volunteer puppy raisers even after they are matched with a person who is blind or visually impaired. Volunteers can continue to meet the dogs, welcome them back for holidays, and receive updates about how they are doing in their new lives.

Throughout the entire puppy-raising period, the Foundation covers all of the puppy’s expenses and provides all necessary equipment, professional guidance, and a warm, supportive community.
