They are now four weeks old. Borso’s puppies have progressed from uncertain waddling to more confident movement, and quiet naps are increasingly replaced by play and exploration. We’ve also started introducing solid food from the O litter alongside mother’s milk—they’re eating mushy kibble so that their mom, Borso, can rest more.
Their space is getting bigger
They’ll soon get to know the garden, but for now, a playpen next to the whelping box provides them with more room to move. Here, they not only play but also increasingly consciously do their business away from their bedding.
We spoke with our foundation’s professional leader, Komondi Piroska, who has known all 26 puppies from the Barathhegyi litters since the moment they were born:
“Soon they’ll go out to the garden during the day, but they already have a playpen inside next to the whelping box so they can play and potty in a larger space. When they wake up, they need to potty, so they have to be taken out right away. This serves one main purpose: getting them used to doing their business outside. This is the first and most important step in house-training puppies.”
So, the foundations of house-training are already forming now.
“Dogs are genetically clean animals—they go away from their spot to do their business. Borso’s puppies are already going outside the whelping box to potty,” Piroska added.

The first milk teeth have emerged
One of the most exciting changes is that their milk teeth are starting to come in. The little ones visibly enjoy using them during play and eating: crunching a larger kibble piece is a real triumph for them.
Thanks to this, the texture of their food is gradually changing too. Since they’re now adept at chewing, mushing is needed less and less—they’re stepping toward independent feeding one bite at a time.
This process naturally shapes the mother’s role as well.
“In the first two weeks, the mother dog is with the puppies practically all day, and from the third week, she spends more time away from them. She only goes in for feeding and cleaning. Since the puppies are eating mushy kibble, this time is increasingly limited,” said Komondi Piroska.

Borso has help
Alongside Borso, the puppies are watched over by Mogyi, the family’s rescued dog. Though the puppies’ father, Elba, hasn’t met them yet due to his absence, Mogyi showers them with great tenderness. She carefully lies down among them, mindful of every tiny movement, and quietly, kindly watches over them.

Play is now learning
The wrestling, playful chases, and little growls in the playpen are all important lessons. Here, they learn bite inhibition, paying attention to each other, and the basics of dog communication.
At four weeks, Borso’s puppies aren’t just growing—they’re developing too. Their emerging teeth, steadier steps, and growing curiosity all signal that a new, exciting phase of their lives has begun.
