Thanks to a guide dog owner’s initiative, guide dogs can walk without leash shortly. Our foundation is happy to inform about a new edict, what comes into force even in July and allows to lead guide dogs without leash at „inlot’s public places”. This way, the dogs can completely rest the fatigue of work.

The primary goal of this change is that, in this way these higly trained dogs who help their owners selflessly, could enjoy the freedom and relaxation, what they deserve, even in public places.

The edict contains the following: „The government’s goal is that, Hungary could become a country, where disabled people’s independent life-style is supported with every method. In the future, the specially trained dogs who have the cognizance, could be lead without leash even in inlot’s public places, so the necessary relaxation is guaranteed after work.”

We would like to add some explanation to this: for the dogs the harness means they’re working with absolute concentration. Therefore, it’s important when the harness is removed, they can relax and from now on, they don’t even need the leash. This way, they can fully relax, what is important because after that, they can concentrate again only for their’s job, that is to lead the owners, who lean their lives on them. Naturally, the term of relaxing without leash is that, the trained guide dogs are disciplined, trained to come when called and fit in all aspects of the rules of coexistance.

The edict touch on the guide dogs are specially trained animals, who help our disabled fellow-creatures’ equal opportunites, independent way of life therefore, even now have different rules in different places, like entering in shops or public transport. Furthermore, it says in regard to the welfare of the animals and in favor of improve the cooperation with the owner it’s reasonable to ease the terms of dogleading at inlots public places.

Relaxing without leash has an important condition according to the ministerial order: the guide dog have to has a clearly recognizable cognizance what shows who made the dog’s training, exam and his applicability. According to the Baráthegyi Guide Dog School Foundation the numbered ticket what is on the dog’s collar is the best for this and the dogs already have it. It shows the foundation’s logo and a serial number, what helps identifying each guide dogs.

The law-makers asked some organization during preparing the modification. Although, Írisz Sáfrány Köbliné can tell the most authentically about the beginnings, because she started this work in last year, what’s result is now visible: „It was a long lasting work, I started it last autumn. But after the many letter writing and effort it worth it. The point is it’s succeeded.” – said our dog, Dolly’s owner, who even wrote a book about one of the most famous guide dog of our country.

We show a part of her letter, what she wrote to László Gajdos, the minister of living environment:

I’ve submit a request about the guide dog’s „leash-law” during the previous government. According to the currently effective road safety exam, we have to let the dog off the leash and then call in so they have to know that without a leash. Walking is important for guide dogs, what we would like to carry out without a leash. Primarily, because it would be good for the dogs, because they can relax and it’s also easier for the visually impaired people, because it’s hard to walk a dog on leash if you’re blind. I would like to ask your help, so this modification could finally come into force.

Our Foundation trains dogs who have a mission. For this duty and their overall welfare they need a quality relaxation. Therefore, we thanks with love for everyone, who takes part in the initiation of leah-usage modification, in the preparing and to put this edict in force.
