Turn on your brain – and your dog’s too! 🐾
Have you ever wondered how guide and assistance dogs become so incredibly smart that they can almost read their owners’ minds? The secret lies not in strict discipline, but in solving puzzles together!
With this little game, you can now try your hand at being a trainer. Your task is simple: guide the virtual pup to the correct behavior, using nothing but the sound of the clicker! No commands, no hand gestures. Just you, the pup, and the click.
How well can you tune into each other? Click, listen, and train your puppy’s mind!
What happens behind the scenes? The science of the clicker 🧠
If you successfully guided the puppy to complete the task, congratulations: you have just tried the free shaping method! But why is this technique so fantastic, and why do we use it in training assistance dogs?
- The brilliant puzzle solver: The essence of free shaping is that we do not force or yank the dog; instead, we let them figure out the solution on their own. The sound of the clicker is merely a signal, much like the words “warmer, warmer, …” in the well-known children’s game. This type of mental training gives the dog’s brain an incredible workout, boosts their confidence, and develops their problem-solving skills.
- The foundation of practical training: Although modified, more guided versions of the method are used in everyday life, the principle of free shaping is essential for assistance dogs. When a dog needs to learn how to open a door, pick up a keychain dropped on the floor, or turn on a light, trainers build up these complex tasks exactly like this – step by tiny step.
Did you know? Clicker History in One Minute 🐬
The roots of clicker training go back to the mid-20th century and the work of psychologist B.F. Skinner, but the method became truly famous through the training of marine mammals. Marine biologist Karen Pryor realized that since you cannot put a leash on a dolphin or physically force it to perform a task, clear, positive reinforcement (a whistle sound followed by a treat) is the only way to communicate. From there, the method was adapted to become the cornerstone of training land-based dogs and – to our greatest joy – guide dogs.
International inspiration: Baráthegyi’s gift to the world 🌍
We are proud to continuously work with the most modern international methods. The creation of this game was inspired by the international conference of Assistance Dogs International (ADI), where renowned experts Serge Gaus and Loes Simonetti gave a fascinating presentation. They demonstrated that the training of assistance dogs can be dramatically accelerated and made more effective by purposefully strengthening the dogs’ independent problem-solving skills.
This concept thrilled us so much that we decided to bring this experience to life in a digital format as well! We created this clicker game as our own proprietary development in cooperation with INTEGRITY Kft., and we proudly presented it to the international professional community as the Baráthegyi team’s contribution to assistance dog work.
Did you enjoy the game?
Share it with your friends too, and if you can, please support the work of the Baráthegyi Guide Dog School, so that even more four-legged heroes can help visually impaired people in real life!
